Amir Khan - Sony Entertainment Television Asia Sports Personality of the Decade

THE Lebara British Asian Sports Awards (BASA) has a reputation for recognising talent from the community before they go on to make an impact in their chosen sport.

In the last 10 years, BASA has unearthed a number of gems including Commonwealth silver medallist Rajiv Ouseph, England women's cricketer Isa Guha as well as Josh Shama, who has just been awarded a scholarship at Reading Football Club.

But the biggest star to emerge from the community is Amir Khan, who has taken boxing by storm and come good on his promise by becoming world champion.

Meet the 10-year-old kickboxing sensation who lit up the stage after taking home the Junior Sports Personality of the Year title at the 10th annual British Asian Sports Awards (BASA).

BRITAIN has produced a number of kickboxing world champions over the years.

Two of the biggest exponents from the Asian community are four-time world title holder Kash "The Flash" Gill and his protégé Sunny "The Hitman" Hira, who has won three world championships in his career.

BASAs proud history of recognising and rewarding some of England’s most talented young cricketers continues with a Leicestershire lad who has set his sights on taking on Sachin Tendulkar to be the best in the world.

BEING called up to the England Under-19 team can be seen as a privilege for any up-coming cricketer.

For batsman Shivsinh Thakor, it is almost expected of him to excel at age group level if his reputation is anything to go by.

After all, he has been getting rave reviews ever since becoming the youngest player to score a century for Leicestershire in age group level, achieving the feat in an under-9s match with Surrey.

With just under a year to go until London plays host to the Olympics and Paralympics, one athlete is already getting into a winning habit.

THE 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be the place to be for athletes from across the world.

And there will be plenty of home support for the British team which will be competing in a number of disciplines.

Among the favourites to bring home a medal is the Great Britain wheelchair rugby team. Four years ago, they finished in fourth place after losing to eventual champions USA in the semi-finals.

This year’s BASAs recognised a number of up-coming footballers showing that Asians are embracing the game. And one strapping defender even walked away with an award on the night!

EVER since the Premier League began in 1992, only two British Asian footballers have graced the top division.

Michael Chopra has played for hometown club Newcastle United as well as rivals Sunderland while defender Zesh Rehman broke through Fulham's academy and made his debut against Liverpool at Anfield in April 2004

King Khan on the importance of the British Asian Sports Awards

THE one abiding memory from the 2004 Olympics in Athens was the image of a young Amir Khan with the Union Jack flag around his shoulders and a silver medal around his neck.
